Zalgiris Kaunas hires Kazys Maksvytis as new head coach

Zalgiris Kaunas officially announced on Monday that Kazys Maksvytis will be the new head coach of the club.

Maksvytis replaces head coach Jure Zdovc, who leaves the team via mutual agreement. Zdovc took over the Lithuanians in mid-October.
Maksvytis signed a two-year deal with Zalgiris Kaunas, which includes an option for a third season. He is also the head coach of Lithuania and will spend the summer preparing the national team for the 2022 EuroBasket (September 1-18).

“We have decided to lay the foundations not only for the end of this season, but also for next year, so we have decided to make the changes now.

(Kazys) will be able to use the months of this season to get to know the players and coaches as well as to convey his philosophy and mentality to the people who will be staying in the club so that he can prepare for the new season with a clear plan,” said Zalgiris general manager Paulius Motiejunas.

Maksvytis has also coached Neptunas Klaipeda, Lietkabelis Panevezys and Sakalai Vilnius in Lithuania and Parma in Russia. He made his EuroLeague debut with Neptunas during the 2014/15 season.

For its part, Zalgiris Kaunas finished the 2021/22 season with the worst record in the competition, tied with ASVEL Villeurbanne (8-20).
