Nets GM yet to make any discussion with Kyrie Irving about contract extension

Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks admitted he has yet to talk contract extension with Kyrie Irving. Irving will also have to decide on his option for next season in order to begin discussing a new deal with the Nets.

“That’s something we’ve been discussing and we will continue to debrief on and discuss throughout this offseason,” Marks said on the expiring contracts.

“…We haven’t had any of those discussions yet, so it will be unfair for me to comment on how it looks with us and Kyrie because to be quite frank he has some decisions to make on his own. He has to look what he’s gonna do with his player option.”

Marks said he has not spoken with Irving and his representatives about whether Irving would pick his $36.9 million player option. Marks made it clear without referring to Irving the availability and putting team over themselves will be a huge factor in the roster building for next season.

Kyrie’s five-year max for a new contract is $245 million. It’s not clear if the Nets will be willing to offer that much, but, Kevin Durant is definitely a huge factor in this decision. Durant signed an extension during the 2021-22 season.

“We’re looking for guys that want to come here and be part of something bigger than themselves. Play selfless, play team basketball and be available and that goes not only for Kyrie but for everybody here,” Marks continued.

Irving missed the first three months of last season because the All-Star point guard refused to be vaccinated. He returned to the team in December as a part-time player before becoming a full-time guard for his team in March.

The Nets got to the postseason via the play-in tournament, but, they did not build team chemistry. As a result, the Boston Celtics swept them in the first round.
