Knicks reportedly interested in Cavs’ guard Collin Sexton

New York Knicks are expected to be active in the offseason after a disappointing year that ended up with the franchise back in the lottery. The Knicks are in need of guard play as the experiment with Kemba Walker did not work.

Several reports suggested the Knicks will look to address the issue via the free agency or trade, with players like Jalen Brunson and Collin Sexton entering the market this summer. Marc Stein recently reported that the Mavericks feel they have the lead in re-signing Brunson.

As a result, the Knicks could try to deprive Sexton away from Cleveland, per Evan Dammarell of Right Down Euclid. The Knicks seem to have serious interest in the scoring guard, per the Cavs’ beat writer.

If Sexton is unable to negotiate a new deal with the Cavs, then the Knicks could try to acquire him via ä sign-and-trade deal. In this case, the Knicks will have to put together a package consisted from Derrick Rose, Nerlens Noel and Alec Burks to match contracts.

Sexton played only 11 games for the Cavs the previous season. He hasn’t played a game for Cleveland since November of last year after being sidelined for the season with a torn left meniscus.

Prior to that, Cleveland and Sexton could not come to an agreement on an extension the past October as the scoring guard demanded a contract around the $100M mark, per report.

Despite the unfortunate end to the contract extension talks last season, the Cleveland Cavaliers “want to keep Sexton and not let him truly test the waters of free agency”, per Dammarell.

Prior to his injury, Sexton averaged career highs in points (24.3), assists (4.4), minutes (35.3) and field-goal percentage (47.5) during the 2020-21 season.
