Nets expected to add Mavs’ coach Igor Kokoskov alongside Steve Nash

Brooklyn Nets will hope to return better as a team after an up and down year during the 2021-22 season. Led by Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, Brooklyn is expected to build a championship team around them starting from the coaching staff.

According to Brian Lewis of NY Post, the Nets will add veteran coach Igor Kokoskov to their staff ahead of next season. Kokoskov wills serve as an assistant to head coach Steve Nash with the pair having a long-standing relationship from the “seven seconds or less” Suns.

The news were first reported from NBA reporter Marc Stein. Kokoskov has experience as a head coach being one season in Phoenix and having a successful run with the Slovenian national team in the 2017 FIBA EuroBasket.

He led a team headlined from a young Luka Doncic and current Nets’ free agent Goran Dragic to the first place in the tournament. He was an assistant under Jason Kidd in Dallas last season reuniting with Doncic.

In addition to Nash, Kokoskov is familiar with Kyrie Irving from having spent the 2013-14 season as an assistant with the Cavaliers. He also served as an assistant in Orlando and Utah.

From 2019-21, he coached the Serbian National Team and now is set to make a reunion with Steve Nash in Brooklyn. The Nets are expected to have many coaching vacancies this offseason, as the team is hoping to turn things around after a disappointing season.
