Chus Mateo to take over Real Madrid’s bench in Pablo Laso’s absence

Real Madrid head coach Pablo Laso is expected to be away from the game after he was admitted to the hospital with a heart attack Sunday night. Although his condition is stable,  the Los Blancos coach is not expected to return again this season (h/t Eurohoops).

Assistant coach Chus Mateo will take over Real Madrid’s bench in Laso’s absence. Mateo has already coached the team before with Laso being away from the bench in December after testing positive for COVID-19.

Real is one win away from the Liga Endesa Finals being up 2-0 in the semifinal series vs Baskonia. Game 3 underway on Tuesday and Real will advance to the Final if the win the contest against the Basques.

Laso remains in the intensive care unit of the Hospital de la Moraleja and is being monitored by doctors. He might need to stay away from the game of basketball for a while before returning to action.

Laso led the Los Blancos to the EuroLeague Finals after an up and down season in the competition. Madrid was at its best condition in the last part of the EuroLeague season sweeping Maccabi in the playoffs.

In Belgrade’s Final-4, Madrid bested its arch-rivals FC Barcelona in the semifinal and move to face title holders Anadolu Efes in the Final. After a thrilling contest, Real wasn’t able to add another EuroLeague title to its collection.
