Scottie Wilbekin is in talks with Fenerbahce and seems pretty close to leave Tel Aviv and join the Turkish League champions, per Israeli journalist Moshe Barda. Wilbekin, 29, is under contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv for the next season.
He also has a Turkish passport, and that’s make him a more attractive target for Fenerbahce. Fener saw former guard Markel Starks joining Darussafaka,, agent Misko Raznatovic reports, while Nando De Colo’s future with the club is still unclear.
Coming out of Florida in 2014, Wilbekin started his career in Australia before coming to Europe to play for Greek club AEK Athens. He then joined Darussafaka for a three-year period winning the EuroCup trophy in the process during the 2017-18 season.
He spent the last four years in Tel Aviv for Maccabi, but he did not acheive success with the club in the European level. The American guard averaged 15.4 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists in the EuroLeague this season.
In other news from the EuroLeague, Fenerbahce longtime GM Maurizio Gherardini extended his contract with the team as the new Basketball Operations General Director, while Derya Yannier promoted to General Manager, the club announced.
Both Gherardini and Yannier have been working in Fener’s front office as executives since 2014. Gherardini was the general manager to put together the team that won the 2017 EuroLeague title.
