Tony Parker, ASVEL willing to build around Victor Wembanyama; Chris Jones, Ellie Ekobo to leave the team

ASVEL president Tony Parker believes Victor Wembanyama has to be the cornerstone of the organization if he opts to remain with French League champions next season. Wembanyama had until 26 of June to decide if he stays with the EuroLeague side.

The 18-years-old wonderkid, who is expected to be the no.1 pick of the 2023 NBA Draft, played sporadically in his first season with the French powerhouse and Paris Basketball seems to be interested in the young big.

Switching from Nanterre 92 to the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague club, he missed multiple games due to injuries. He averaged 6.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.9 blocks per contest over 15 EuroLeague appearances.

“We’re waiting for his [Wembanyama] answer and I hope it will be positive,” Parker said per several French media Saturday (25/6), right after ASVEL won its third consecutive French League championship.

“We absolutely want to keep him. We want to build everything around him, Parker continued (h/t Eurohoops). ASVEL beat AS Monaco 84-82 in overtime of a dramatic Game 5 to win in the French League finals.

“We are going to be looted,” Parker stated. “When you have a good season, it’s clear that you get looted. We are going to lose major players like Elie Okobo and Chris Jones.”
