Damian Lillard has urged the Portland Trail Blazers to bolster the roster in the offseason and help the team return to playoff contention.
The superstar guard, who is expected to sign a two-year, $100M extension soon, wants to see the Blazers make moves that will let them become a title contender.
“While it has been widely assumed Lillard will accept the two-year extension offer worth more than $100 million that is expected to come his way, sources say the Trail Blazers still needed to have a strong offseason to persuade Lillard to sign on through the 2026-27 campaign (when he’ll be 36).
The deadline here isn’t until the start of the regular season, and I’m being told this is not a sure thing just yet,” The Athletic’s Sam Amick reports.
So far, Portland has traded for Jerami Grant, signed contract extensions with Anfernee Simons and Jusuf Nurkic, while also landing NBA champion Gary Payton II.
For his part, Damian Lillard has recovered from a season-ending abdominal surgery he underwent in January and has his sights set on the start of the 2022/23 season. Lillard still has three years and $136,9M left in his current contract.
