Lorenzo Brown officially acquired the Spanish citizenship, as announced by the Boletin Oficial del Estado, BOE. Brown is expected to make his first appearance in the 2022 EuroBasket.
Sergio Scariolo’s options at point guard were limited by Ricky Rubio being sidelined, and Sergio Rodriguez ended his international career following the 2020 Olympic Games. Scariolo worked with Brown during his stint in Toronto.
The Maccabi Tel Aviv newcomer played in 107 NBA games, starting his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He started his overseas career in Europe with Crvena Zvezda and continued with Maccabi Tel Aviv and UNICS Kazan last season.
Brown averaged 13.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 17.3 PIR for UNICS Kazan in the EuroLeague last season. Last week, he joined Israeli powerhouse Maccabi Tel Aviv on a two-year deal.
Prior to EuroBasket, the veteran guard will be eligible to play in the second round of the FIBA Basketball Qualifiers for the 2023 World Cup. FIBA regulations only allow one naturalized player to compete for each national team.
