Real Madrid has officially announced the hiring of Chus Mateo as the new head coach of the team after the dismissal of Pablo Laso. Mateo is signing a two-year deal with the Whites, per the club’s official statement.
Laso and the ACB giants came to a common understating, per the team’s official report, and parted ways by mutual agreement. Chus Mateo led the team in the last few games of the season and help Madrid clinch the ACB title over FC Barcelona.
Real Madrid CF announces that Chus Mateo will be the coach of the first basketball team for the next two seasons, until June 30, 2024.
Chus Mateo has been linked to Real Madrid as coach of the academy or as assistant coach from 1990 to 2004 and, from 2014 to the present, as Pablo Laso’s assistant coach.
Likewise, Real Madrid CF and Pablo Laso have decided by mutual agreement to end their relationship as coach of the first basketball team.
Real Madrid wants to show its gratitude and affection to Pablo Laso for leading our team in one of the most successful stages in our history.
During the 11 seasons that he has been in charge of our first basketball team, Pablo Laso has won 22 titles: 2 European Cups, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 6 Leagues, 6 Copas del Rey and 7 Super Cups.
With this record, Pablo Laso becomes one of the greatest legends of our club and most loved by all of Real Madrid, with these 22 titles equaling the record of Lolo Sáinz, and having only Pedro Ferrándiz ahead, with 27 titles.
Pablo Laso has ended his stage at Real Madrid as the coach with the most games directed (860) and the most victories achieved (659).
Real Madrid wishes him and his entire family all the best in this new stage of his life. Real Madrid will always be his home.
