NBA rumors: Pacers expected to make offer for Deandre Ayton

Deandre Ayton remains one of the last star-caliber free agents in the market and the Indiana Pacers might be in to make an offer for him in the next few hours. The Phoenix Suns are still unwilling to pay Ayton and maybe Indiana could force them to match.

If Ayton accepts, the Phoenix Suns would have to either match the offer sheet or let him go for nothing. They would not be able to use him in a potential sign and trade as Phoenix remains one of the prime candidates in Kevin Durant sweepstakes.

The report surfaced by Suns’ reporter John Gambadoro, who expects Phoenix and Ayton situation to come to a resolution in the next few hours. It makes sense that the Indiana Pacers would target Deandre Ayton.

They are a rebuilding team that can afford to take a gamble on him, and they are likely banking on him becoming a better offensive player when given more touches. He can be paired with point guard Tyrese Haliburton, who is already a starting caliber guard.

There are likely other teams that will try and sign the Suns’ big to an offer sheet. However, not many have the cap space to add him to a lucrative deal. Phoenix is obviously unwilling to offer max money to Ayton and the bigman could play elsewhere next season.

The Suns were the best regular season team last year, but they fell short in the playoffs losing to Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference semifinals.
