LeBron James shines in first Drew League appearance since 2011

With more than 2,000 fans attending the Drew League a pro-am summer league based in L.A. that has hosted a handful of NBA players including LeBron James as well as local college and overseas prospects.

LeBron James was one of those that appeared in the tournament’s opening day, while Kyrie Irving was schedule to play yesterday but never appeared. This marked James’ first Drew League appearance since participating in 2011 during the NBA lockout.

The fans saw LeBron James in action alongside DeMar DeRozan, who attends the tournament every year. Energized by the crowd, James led the MMV Cheaters with 42 points, 16 rebounds and four steals in a 104-102 victory over Black Pearl Elite.

DeRozan added 30 points and 14 rebounds. Warriors forward Draymond Green, Lakers forward Talen Horton-Tucker, Lakers guard Kendrick Nunn and former NBA player Baron Davis also attended the game, per NBA.com Mark Medina.

Per the Drew League Commissioner Dino Smiley, Kyrie Irving could attend the games Sunday. The rumor that James and Irving will reunite on the court sparked a social media frenzy.

“They were pretty sure he was coming,” Smiley said of Irving’s representatives. “But you know how Kyrie is. I guess he changed his mind in the middle of it.”

Though Irving and James had games scheduled at different times, their expected arrival also sparked intrigue on a possible partnership next season with the Lakers. The Lakers are reportedly in talks with the Nets for a potential Kyrie Irving deal.
