Golden State Warriors veteran forward can become a free agent next summer and according to Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic (h/t Yahoo Sports) he will demand a max deal from the franchise.

The Warriors have four extensions looming in the next two years and they hope to keep their core intact after wining the 2022 NBA championship. Per the report, Green believes he deserves a deal worth $164.2 million over the next five seasons.

The Warriors are unlikely to offer that type of deal to an aging veteran. That is, without question, a lot of money for Green – a player who hasn’t averaged more than eight points per game since 2017 and at times looked like a shell of himself during this past season.

If the team cannot offer him that type of money, then the veteran forward said he’s willing “to explore his outside options to get the kind of contract he wants.” Slater and Thompson II noted the Warriors usually wait until a player has one year left on his current deal.

Gree, however, can opt-out of the current contract before the final year of that deal prior to the upcoming season. That imminent possibility could force the Warriors’ hand, either by making an offer to Green or by trading him away.

It should be noted that Green also has a 15 percent trade kicker in his current deal if the Warriors move him. However, there is a balance that can be disrupted if the Warriors trade away Green as there’s risk of angering Steph Curry, per Slater and Thompson.

ESPN listed Golden State’s luxury tax bill for this past season at $170 million, up from $69 million in 2020-21. Projections show the team paying $181 million next season. The Warriors also have to keep Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins, who are on expiring contracts.

The NBA fined Lacob $500,000 for calling the luxury tax “very unfair” last week after the the franchise paid more than $170 million in luxury tax (an NBA record) and $346 million in total payroll last season.
