There’s a lot to like about Bayern’s additions and retentions this offseason so far, as it’s not known if we see the last move in the Bavarians’ offseason with point guard Cassius Winston. Bayern parted ways with Deshaun Thomas and Darrun Hilliard this summer.

Both players thrived as top scoring options in team’s offense last season, but they were more focused on creating for themselves in a more iso-oriented game. Bayern is definitely looking for a change of style in the offense next year.

Cassius Winston is a pick & roll maestro and he can attack the paint or shoot the ball over his opponent in a potential switch. Freddie Gillespie could operate in pick and roll and dive aggressively to the basket.

The German BBL powerhouse will also have a strong core under the rim with veteran center Othello Hunter, who had a great season last year, and Augustine Rubit alongside Gillespie and young prospect Danko Brankovic.

Lucic can also operate in small lineups as a power forward, while the addition of Niklas Wimberg will add depth in the forward position. Wimberg had a strong season with Niners Chemnitz and helped the team reach the playoffs.

Harris came as an injection of experience in the team’s core after the departure of long-time captain Nihad Djedovic. Head coach Andrea Trinchieri will have the tools in his roster to operate in more versatile ways.

He can operate in big lineups with Lucic or Zipser at the small forward, Jaramaz as the guard and a combination of Hunter, Rubit and Gillespie in the paint. At the same time he will have the ability to go small adding more perimeter play with Winston, Walden, Obst or Zisko.

Bayern also signed Nick Weiler-Babb to a new deal keeping their breakout forward, who served as a point guard in many occasions last season. With Walden injured, Weiler-Babb worked with the ball more and initiate play in the offensive end.

He also remained a true menacing presence in the defensive end, especially on the ball. He averaged 6.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.1 steals in EuroLeague and if the rest of the team remains healthy he will be a great asset in defense.

After making the EuroLeague playoffs for the second consecutive season, Bayern is hoping to make the next step and reach the EuroLeague Final-4 for the first time in the history of the club.

Bayern is likely a more well-rounded team than last season, but missing two high-caliber scorers could hurt the club’s offensive production. If they want to make the Final-4, the German giants will need to see Lucic returning to All-EuroLeague form.

Also, the production of Winston and the defensive presence of Gillespie could play a huge factor in potential success during the 2022-23 season. It remains to be seen if the team will look to add more to its roster this summer.
