Jorge Garbajosa expects Spain to be among the teams that will fight for the gold medal in the EuroBasket (September 1-18).

The president of the Spanish Basketball Federation placed the national team among the favorites of the tournament alongside fellow European powerhouses.

“It will be a very demanding championship. Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Germany, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Lithuania and Turkey are candidates to be on the podium.

This EuroBasket is probably the most demanding challenge we have faced in recent times, but we will fight and try as this team has always done.

Having Rudy and Llull on the team is invaluable, and I am sure we will return from this championship with our heads held high. With a medal? We’ll see,” Garbajosa said in an interview with Radio Marca.

Spain is set to tip off its training camp this week and will play a total of four preparation matches against Greece in Athens (August 9) and Madrid (August 11) and against Lithuania in Gran Canaria (August 16) and Vilnius (August 18), respectively.

They will then compete in the first two games of the Second Round of the 2023 Basketball World Cup against Iceland (August 24) and the Netherlands (August 27).

Spain will travel to Tbilisi in late August to take on hosts Georgia, Montenegro, Bulgaria, Turkey and Belgium in Group A.
