Thomas Heurtel will remain eligible to play in the EuroBasket, after confirming his participation in the tournament with France.

Earlier this week, the French Basketball Federation decided that all players competing in Russia or Belarus will be ineligible to play for France in FIBA competitions. The decision was made as a result of Russia-Ukraine war.

Following the decision, Heurtel’s participation in the tournament was in jeopardy, as he was close to a deal with Zenit Saint Petersburg.

However, the French guard revealed that he has signed a sworn statement that he will not sign with any Russian team, so he is expected to remain with the national team.

“My agents are in contact with clubs. Russian clubs, in particular, if you want to know. But also other EuroLeague teams, in Spain. We’ll see what happens in the future.

Yes (I have signed it) and you know it. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be here,” Thomas Heurtel said in a press conference on Tuesday, via Basketnews.com.

Thomas Heurtel didn’t rule out the possibility of joining a Russian team in the future, but, for the time being, he has his sights set on helping France in the EuroBasket.

Heurtel is part of the 15-man preliminary roster of France, which is getting ready for the games against the Czech Republic (August 24) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (August 27) for the Second Round of the Basketball World Cup Qualifiers.

France will travel to Cologne in late August and will take on Germany, Lithuania, Hungary, Bosnia and Slovenia in Group B of the first round of the EuroBasket.
