Donovan Mitchell on his expectations with the Cavaliers: “On paper, we look scary”

New Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell meet the media for the first time as member of the franchise and explained why he has high expectations entering the 2022-23 season.

“There’s no reason. We have to go out there and do the work,” Mitchell said. “On paper, we look scary. But at the end of the day it comes down to what we do in the gym.

We had a good run today and we’ve got to continue to have good work, so I can’t sit here and tell you, ‘Yes, we’re a championship team,’” the 3-time All-Star said.

The Utah Jazz traded their franchise player to the Cavaliers for three unprotected first round picks and two pick swaps on Sept. 1. But, before the blockbuster deal came to fruition, it was rumored for weeks that Mitchell was headed home to play for the Knicks.

Mitchell joins a talented Cleveland squad that features 2022 All-Stars Jarrett Allen, Darius Garland as well as standout big man Evan Mobley. Last season, Mitchell averaged 23.9 points, 4.5 assists, 4.2 rebounds on 45 percent shooting for the Jazz.

“We have to go out there and prove it every night. I know we’re going to have good months and good weeks and good days and we’re going to have bad weeks and bad days.

But for us, if we continue to put the work in night in and night out and continue to put that effort in with the right plays we might do something.”
