Filip Petrusev wanted to remain in the EuroLeague in order to continue developing in the upper echelon of the European basketball. Petrusev, who was the 50th overall pick of the 2021 NBA Draft, hopes make the jump to the NBA at some point of his career.

Being selected by the Sixers, he will have the opportunity to expand his game this season as he hopes to receive more playing time going forward. Petrusev spent the past season with the EuroLeague champions Anadolu Efes.

“I didn’t get the opportunity I thought I would get, although I showed in some games that I can play at that level,” Petrusev told Mozzart Sport. “Now I came here to show that I can do it consistently and help the team.

I look forward to every game, especially in the EuroLeague. I haven’t played in a few months, so I will look forward to every game and every game will mean something to me.”

The Serbian center didn’t participate in any playoff or Final Four games as Efes went on to win the back-to-back EuroLeague championship. The 2021 ABA League MVP averaged just nine minutes, registering 5.2 points and 1.6 rebounds.

Petrusev revealed the Sixers, who own his draft rights, supported his decision to continue in the EuroLeague with Crvena Zvezda. Petrusev appeared in the Summer League with the Philadelphia franchise, averaging 5.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, 1.0 steals, and 1.0 assists per game over four games.

“They [the Sixers] supported it,” he said. “The EuroLeague is the highest level of competition in Europe and that’s where I’ll definitely develop the most.”
