Chus Mateo says Real Madrid will welcome Facundo Campazzo if he opts to return

Real Madrid has been facing a shortage of point guards with the injuries of Carlos Alocen and Nigel Williams-Goss. The Whites head coach Chus Mateo spoke about the possibility of Facundo Campazzo returning to Madrid.

Mateo was asked about the matter at the press conference after the Bàsquet Girona-Real Madrid matchup, where the Whites survived a close-fought battle to win the ACB opener in front of a sold-out crowd in Girona.

“I wish there was a place for him. If there is, he’s WELCOME. We are very fond of him and we know what he can give. But now he is not a player ON the team. If he joins, fantastic, but the ones that matter now are the ones we have in the dressing room,” the rookie head coach said.

Campazzo remains a free agent after spending two seasons in Denver with the Nuggets. Campazzo left Madrid in December 2020 to pursue a career in the NBA. He averaged 5.6 points, 3.5 assists and 1.9 rebounds in 135 games with the Nuggets.

The veteran guard is coming off a successful summer with the Argentina NT leading the team to the Gold medal in the 2022 FIBA AmeriCup. Madrid will have to wait on Campazzo, but the season has already started.
