Al Horford will remain with the Boston Celtics, after signing a two-year contract extension with the 17-time NBA champions.
The veteran big man is in the final year of his current contract (4 years, $109M) and would become a free agent in the summer of 2023.
Following the extension, he will remain with the franchise until the summer of 2025, when he will be 39 years old. The new deal is worth a total of $20M, while Horford will earn $26,5M this season.
Horford, a five-time All-Star, will earn $26.5M this season — with the new deal beginning in 2023-2024. The extension eliminates the possibility of a repeat of 2019 when Horford left the Celtics for a more lucrative free agency offer.

In his second stint with Boston, Al Horford has become a key part of the team’s playing style and managed to reach the NBA Finals last season, ending the league’s longest playoff streak without winning a conference championship (141 postseason games).
This year, he is averaging 10.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 18 games, on 55.5% from the field and 48.8% from beyond the arc. The Celtics are on top of the NBA with the best record in the league (18-4).
