Giannoulis Larentzakis and Olympiacos are very close to becoming the first team to clinch its spot in the EuroLeague playoffs.

Currently on a five-game win streak, the “Reds” are on top of the standings with a 16-7 record and need another two or three wins to secure their ticket to the postseason.

Olympiacos is coming off a crucial home win over reigning champions Anadolu Efes and will take on ALBA Berlin at Mercedes-Benz Arena on Wednesday.

After the game against the Turkish powerhouse, Hedgeout.net spoke with Olympiacos guard Giannoulis Larentzakis about the team’s performance so far this season, his role in the team and the fans’ support:

Here is what Giannoulis Larentzakis, one of the best Olympiacos’ players this season, told Hedgeout.net on Friday night:

On the team’s defense in the second part of the season and the “Reds” being a few wins away from the playoffs:

We have been playing well on both ends and that has helped us come very close to securing our spot in the playoffs. We have been playing great defense since the start of the season, this is the cornerstone of our success.

On Olympiacos winning games through both its offense (scoring 90+ points) and defense (limiting its opponents to 70 or less points):

Being able to win games both through our defense and offense has been one of our strengths this season. We gain energy by playing well defensively and offensively we can create shots for everyone through our ball movement and unselfish basketball.

On his advanced role in Olympiacos:

I feel great playing for Olympiacos. I have a great relationship with the coach (Giorgos Bartzokas), he believes in me, he has faith in me and I always try to do my best on both ends, either by scoring or playing defense to help the team.

So far, I think I have been successful in my role, all players have a key role in the team, they have significant playing time and that has helped the team get the victories and we are looking forward to the coming games and what lies ahead.

On the fans support and the consecutive sold-out at Peace and Friendship Stadium:

Our fans have been really supportive since the start of the season. Our job is to do our best on the floor, and the fans are doing their best to help us and give us energy to play even better.

We have managed to bring Olympiacos fans back to Peace and Friendship Stadium and the three straight sold-out is a proof for that. This connection between the team and fans is very important and gives us extra motivation for the last part of the season.

Giannoulis Larentzakis has appeared in all 23 EuroLeague games for Olympiacos this season, averaging a career-high 8.6 points, on 46.9% from the field and 41.5% from beyond the arc, on 17 minutes on the floor.
