Jason Kidd explains what he expects to see from Kyrie Irving; calls Mavs ‘Luka’s team’

Jason Kidd opened up about what he expects to see from Kyrie Irving on the floor, while he also referred to the on-court relationship between Irving and Luka Doncic.

The head coach of the Dallas Mavericks wants to see Irving play at an All-Star level, while he believes it will take some time for Irving and Doncic to build chemistry on and off the floor.

“I want Ky to be Ky,” Jason Kidd said. “I want him to go out there and play at the level we all know he can play. Luka is going to join the party. He’s that good. You don’t have to worry about whether he’s going to show [up]. We all know that he loves the stage.

He’s still in control. What we’re looking at is how to make things a lot easier so he won’t be as tired coming down the stretch,” Kidd added.

“Setting a screen will also help someone else get an open shot. Just the gravity that Luka has, that’s going to happen. I think the game will become easier for him.”

Kidd made it clear that despite Irving’s arrival, Luka Doncic remains the No.1 in the team: “We understand this is Luka’s team. It will be Luka’s team,” Jason Kidd said.

Kyrie Irving spoke with the media for the first time since his trade to the Dallas Mavericks and addressed a lot of different topics. Barring any setbacks, he is expected to make his debut with Dallas in the road game vs the LA Clippers on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Luka Doncic, who is averaging 33.4 points, 8.9 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game this season, could miss the Mavs’ five-game road trip, as he is dealing with a heel injury.
