Real Madrid extends win streak as Walter Tavares exits with ankle injury

Real Madrid saw its star big man Walter Tavares exit the game with an ankle injury, but survived a late thriller vs ASVEL Villeurbanne at Astroballe (71-75).

Tavares suffered the injury in the last minute of the game in attempt to stop Nando De Colo, who was driving to the basket. The star big man from Cape Verde rolled his ankle and was helped into the locker room by Real’s staff.

After the game, Real Madrid head coach Chus Mateo confirmed Walter Tavares’ injury, but noted that pending medical tests will determine its extent.

“I saw that [Walter] Tavares twisted his ankle, but I don’t know for the moment if it’s a big injury,” Mateo said afterwards.

Real Madrid was in control in the first half and led by as many as 17 points (32-49). ASVEL, though, fought back and cut the deficit to two (62-64), but the “Whites” stood tall and made some clutch shots in crunch time to seal the deal.

After extending its winning streak to five games, Real Madrid returned to the top of the standings (18-7), while ASVEL dropped to 8-18 and is on the brink of elimination.
