Hedge Out Stories : 4 things that stood out from EuroLeague Round 26

With the conclusion of EuroLeague Round 26, we got a step closer to the end of the regular season and still everything is on the line regarding the playoff spots and the home-court advantage.

Ahead of the EuroLeague double-round week (Round 27 and 28), let’s have a look at four things that stood out from last week’s games:

#1 – Facundo Campazzo has finally made his debut with Crvena Zvezda

Facundo Campazzo’s return to the EuroLeague for the “Red and Whites” was most expected. Unfortunately, this debut didn’t end well for the team. The sixth loss in the last seven games places the Belgrade team 13th (11-15), two wins behind the 8th place and the reigning champions Anadolu Efes (13-12).

Campazzo (16 points, 7 assists in his debut) needs to take over and turn the tide immediately, if they wish to get to the playoffs.

#2 – Fenerbahce extending Marko Guduric’s contract and signing Tyler Dorsey

The Turkish team has three wins in a row. They are now placed within the top four in the standings, having the upper hand in the home-court advantage.

Tyler Dorsey’s addition (read here when he could make his debut with the team) and Marko Guduric’s new contract further extend the choices of coach Itoudis and the team has made a statement. They want to return to the top and stay there long-term.

#3 – Real Madrid and Barcelona tied Olympiacos

Both Spanish powerhouses have five straight wins. Real Madrid is now on top (also pending a match against Efes) and Barcelona is third and they are facing Olympiacos on Tuesday, looking to both surpassing them (both tied at 18-8) and getting the tie-breaker (they have to win by 11+ points).

#4 – Olympiacos’ blowout loss to Armani Milano

The performance of the Piraeus team was nowhere near what we have seen in the past seven matches. They looked vulnerable and unable to react to Ettore Messina’s tricks and, hence, their seven-game win streak came to an end.

However, losing is part of the game and Olympiacos knows how to respond and get it together. The match against Barcelona comes in perfect timing for them since there is no room for relaxing.

With another double-game week ahead, teams are getting in the final turn of the regular season. Neither the playoffs nor the home-court advantage is secured for any team yet. This is indeed the most challenging EuroLeague regular season we have seen in many years.
