Grizzlies extend Ja Morant’s suspension as NBA investigation continues

The Memphis Grizzlies extended Ja Morant’s suspension, as the NBA continues to investigate the gun incident he was involved in on Saturday.

The franchise announced that the superstar guard will miss at least another four games, which means that he has been ruled out vs the Golden State Warriors on Thursday, Dallas Mavericks on Saturday and Monday and the Miami Heat on March 15.

The earliest Ja Morant could play is vs the San Antonio Spurs on March 17, and there’s no guarantee of that.

The Glendale Police Department in Colorado also announced on Wednesday that their investigation has been completed and they will press no charges against Ja Morant. The league’s investigation remains ongoing and further sanctions are pending.

The superstar guard had initially been suspended two games for a social media post, where he live streamed himself holding what appeared to be a gun at a nightclub. It is unclear how much time he will miss, as the league has yet to complete its investigation.

This is at least the second time in the last few weeks that Ja Morant has been the subject of a league investigation for his actions on and off the court.

On Sunday, Memphis head coach Taylor Jenkins addressed his player’s suspension and noted that Ja Morant needs help to get over the issues he is dealing with and the Grizzlies will fully support him during that process.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Grizzlies held a players-only meeting to address their off-court behavior, not long before Morant’s gun incident and subsequent suspension.

Morant, who is averaging 27.1 points and 8.2 assists per game, released a statement on Saturday, noting that he will take time away to get help, while he deactivated his social media accounts.

The Grizzies are third in the Western Conference standings with a 38-26 record, tied with the Sacramento Kings and 7.5 games behind the West leaders Denver Nuggets (46-19).
