Nikola Mirotic could part ways with Barcelona after the end of the season, as the club aims for a budget cut next season.
Mirotic, who is the highest-paid player in the EuroLeague with an annual salary of five million euros, is under contract with the club for two more years. However, the Catalans want to reduce the expenses, including Mirotic’s contract.
According to Sport, Barcelona has already contacted the player and informed him that he would either take a 50% pay cut, or he could leave the club at the end of this season, once the ACB playoffs finish.
Per Jose Ignacio Huguet of Mundo Deportivo, the reduction in the budget could be around 10 million euros, so it wouldn’t come as a surprise if more players with lucrative contracts part ways with the squad.
“I have a contract with Barcelona and I would like to finish it. But there are players, in basketball and other sports, who sometimes have not been able to fulfill their contract until the end of it,” Nikola Mirotic said after the third-place game vs Monaco last Sunday.
“We’ll see what happens with my future, although – as I’ve said before – I have two more years [until 2025] on my contract. Obviously, I would like to fulfill it, but nothing has been really decided yet,” he added.
Nikola Mirotic joined the “Blaugrana” in the summer of 2019 and has played in three straight EuroLeague Final Fours (2021, 2022, 2023, as the 2019/20 came to an end in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic) without claiming the title.
