A few weeks after parting ways with the Toronto Raptors, Nick Nurse has become the new head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, the club announced on Thursday.
“I’m honored to be named head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers. It’s been a fun challenge coaching against this group over the last five years. Now, I look forward to coaching the Sixers and doing my part to deliver for this tremendous fanbase,” Nick Nurse said in a statement.
With their decision to hire Nurse, the Sixers are remaining all-in with their championship pursuits as they look to end more than two decades of championship drought. Philadelphia hasn’t reached the NBA Finals since 2001 and hasn’t won a title since 1983. What is worse is that they haven’t advanced past the second round since 2001.
Nurse will replace Doc Rivers, who was fired after he led the Sixers to their second straight 50-win season behind 2023 NBA MVP Joel Embiid, but again failed to lead them to the Eastern Conference Finals. Rivers won the 2008 NBA championship with the Boston Celtics.
