Sarunas Jasikevicius leaves Barcelona as Roger Grimau takes over

Sarunas Jasikevicius and Barcelona have officially parted ways after three years, the Catalan club announced on Monday.

The Lithuanian head coach did not reach an agreement with the club regarding a new contract, so his third stint with the club, and his first as the team’s head coach, came to an end.

Under Sarunas Jasikevicius’s guidance, Barcelona made it to three consecutive EuroLeague Final Fours from 2021 to 2023.

In that time, it reached the championship game in 2021, losing to Anadolu Efes, and lost twice to Real Madrid, in the 2022 and 2023 semifinals. Sarunas Jasikevicius also led Barca to two Spanish League and two Spanish Cup titles in his four seasons with the club.

Now, Roger Grimau takes over and will make his EuroLeague debut as head coach next year. The 44-year-old coach worked for the Catalans, as their Spanish fourth division head coach last season, in addition to coaching the club’s ANGT side.

Roger Grimau was team captain when Barcelona claimed its last EuroLeague title in 2010, and he played for the team for nine consecutive seasons (2003-2011).

Barcelona is set to make changes to its roster and has already decided to part ways with superstar forward Nikola Mirotic. Mirotic was under contract with the club utntil 2025, but he will leave due to budget cuts.
