5 NBA superstars that signed supermax extensions in 2023 Free Agency

The 2023 NBA Free Agency started on Friday with a lot of significant moves taking place over the past 72 hours.

Kyrie Irving stayed with the Dallas Mavericks, Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura re-signed with the LA Lakers, Draymond Green remained with the Golden State Warriors, while the Houston Rockets kicked off the new era with the acquisition of Dillon Brooks and Fred VanVleet.

Meanwhile, there were a few superstars that signed lucrative, multi-year max and supermax extensions with their respective teams. Let’s take a look at the five NBA superstars that agreed to max extensions at Free Agency:

#5 – Jordan Clarkson – Utah Jazz

The Utah Jazz kept standout guard Jordan Clarkson around for several more seasons. Clarkson and the Jazz agreed to a three-year, $55M contract renegotiation and extension. The deal includes next season and would run through the 2025/26 season.

Last season, Jordan Clarkson moved into a starting role and averaged 20.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.4. assists per game in 61 games for Utah before a finger sprain sidelined him for the remainder of the season.

#4 – Tyrese Haliburton – Indiana Pacers

All-Star guard Tyrese Haliburton will remain in Indiana for the foreseeable future after agreeing to a five-year, $260M maximum contract extension with the Pacers.

The 23-year-old guard has improved his scoring average in each of his five NBA seasons, including a career-best 20.7 points per game last year. His assists have trended up as well to an additional career high of 10.4 per game, also set last season.

#3 – Desmond Bane – Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies locked in another key piece of their talented young core, coming to terms with Desmond Bane on a five-year, $207M extension.

Bane, the 30th and last pick of the 2020 NBA Draft’s first round, is coming off a career season in which he averaged 21.5 points, 5.0 boards and 4.4 assists while shooting 40.8% from the three-point range.

#2 – Anthony Edwards – Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves and All-Star Anthony Edwards have agreed to a five-year contract extension that could reach $260M.

Edwards, one of the most explosive finishers in the NBA and a first-time All-Star last season, averaged 24.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists last year.

He was particularly solid in the playoffs for Minnesota in its first-round series against the eventual champion Denver Nuggets. In that series, he averaged 31.6 points, 5.0 boards, 5.2 assists and 1.8 steals as the Wolves lost the series in five games (4-1).

#1 – Domantas Sabonis – Sacramento Kings

The Sacramento Kings have locked up the final piece of the core that finished third in the West, snapping the NBA’s all-time longest playoff drought at 16 seasons.

All-Star forward Domantas Sabonis agreed to renegotiate and extend his current contract with the Kings. The deal is worth $217M over the next five seasons and does not include any player or team options.

Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Sabonis’ salary is rising to $30.6M next season (a raise of $8.6M) and a four-year extension that will give Sabonis nearly $200M until the end of the deal.
