Virtus Bologna has found Sergio Scariolo’s replacement in FIBA World Cup 2023 Best Coach Luca Banchi, who agreed to a two-yer deal on Friday.
Banchi returns to the EuroLeague after five years. He had finished the 2017-18 season with a 2-4 record for Bamberg after replacing Andrea Trinchieri. Most recently, he led Latvia to an unexpected fifth-place finish in the FIBA World Cup.
“Virtus Pallacanestro Bologna S.p.A. announces that it has reached an agreement until 30 June 2025 with Luca Banchi, fresh off winning the Best Coach of the World 2023 award,” the statement reads.

Luca Banchi replaces Sergio Scariolo, who is no longer the head coach of Virtus Bologna after the Italian club parted ways with him on Friday.
The Italian coach took over the team in 2021, winning the 2022 EuroCup title and leading Virtus back to the EuroLeague after 15 years. Sergio Scariolo was on an expiring contract and left the club after some comments he made during a preseason press conference on Wednesday.
