Virtus Bologna storms back from down 16 to beat FC Barcelona – EuroLeague round 12

Virtus Bologna continued its great run with a big comeback win over FC Barcelona on Wednesday. Baskonia prevailed over Fenerbahce in a thriller, while Maccabi Tel Aviv slipped past LDLC ASVEL in a close-fought battle.

ASVEL remained without a home win in the last 10 months. On the other hand, Valencia Basket survived a close game against Zvezda to put an end to a 5-game skid in the EuroLeague. Without further ado, here is the recap of round 12 action on Wednesday night.

Virtus Bologna (8-4) vs FC Barcelona (9-3) 80-75

Key to victory: Virtus Bologna gave up a 16-point (20-36) advantage to FC Barcelona in the first half and was down 12 (33-45) at the intermission. Bologna stormed back in the third quarter and cut the lead to 56-61 at the end of the 3rd quarter changing the momentum ahead of the final period. During final quarter, Toko Shengelia and Iffy Lundberg came up big and led Virtus Bologna to a huge win in front of its fans.

Top Performers: Iffy Lundberg had 21 points with 11 of them coming in the crucial fourth quarter. Lundberg hit a big three in the final minute of the contest to put Virtus Bologna up by 4 (79-75).  Toko Shengelia and Daniel Hackett had 14 points apiece for Virtus Bologna. Willy Hernangomez and Jan Vesely were the only FC Barcelona players to reach double digits in points, scoring 15 and 13, respectively.

Baskonia (7-5) vs Fenerbahce (6-6) 80-79

Key to victory: In a back and forth game, Tyler Dorsey put Fenerbahce ahead 77-79 in the closing seconds, but Markus Howard answered immediately with a three to help Baskonia regain the lead. Marko Guduric missed the last second attempt and Baskonia got a huge victory.

Top Performers: Markus Howard led all players with 28 points and Maik Kotsar had a huge role with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Nigel Hayes-Davis led Fenerbahce with 19 points.

Valencia Basket (6-6) vs Crevna Zvezda (4-8) 85-81

Key to victory: Valencia took a 56-40 advantage at the half, but Crevna Zvezda came back to level the game in the third quarter (62-61). The Spanish club found its way to 7-point (81-74) with 3 minutes remaining before Zvezda ties the game 81-81 entering the final minute of the contest. However, Valencia finished with a small 4-0 run a put an end to a 5-game skid

Top Performers: Brandon Davies paced Valencia with 21 points and forward Semi Ojeleye added 17 for the home side. Nemanja Nedovic and Shabazz Napier scored 14 points each, Milos Teodosic added 11 to go with 9 assists for the losing side.

LDLC ASVEL (2-10) vs Maccabi Tel Aviv (7-5) 91-94

Key to victory: With the game tied at 85-85 and 1:28 remaining on the clock, Maccabi Tel Aviv made a small 0-5 run to take a 5-point advantage with 45 seconds remaining. In a game that had 23 lead changes, this small run was enough for Maccabi to run away with the victory at the end holding the lead until the end.

Top Performers: Wade Baldwin led Maccabi with 21 points, while Lorenzo Brown finished with 16. Roman Sorkin and Bonzie Colson followed the two Maccabi stars with 15 points apiece. Nando De Colo had a game-high 22 points for ASVEL LDLC.
