Heat, Erik Spoelstra agree to record extension

Miami Heat and head coach Erik Spoelstra has agreed to a contract extension worth $120M through the next eight years. The news were first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The deal will make Spoelstra the second -highest paid coach in the NBA and the agreement will represent the largest overall deal for a head coach not only in the NBA, but in North American sports.

Spoelstra made the NBA finals six times and won 2 NBA titles with the Miami Heat. He has led Miami to a 21-15 record this season having them as a top-6 seed in the East despite the numerous injuries to key players.

Spoelstra has been Miami’s coach since 2008, when he was appointed to replace Hall of Famer Pat Riley. He is 725-506 over 15-plus seasons since taking over the Heat in 2008-09.
