Keeping Sergio Scariolo on a new, 4-year deal is a priority, says Spanish Basketball Federation president

Sergio Scariolo has been the head coach of Spain for 12 years in two different stints. He first took over the national team in 2009 and stayed there until 2012. He then returned in 2015 and remains the head coach of the team.

The new president of the Spanish Basketball Federation, Elisa Aguilar, opened up about Scariolo’s future and made it clear that the priority is to sign a new, four-year deal with the Italian coach.

I mentioned it from day one. Our priority is Scariolo so that he can be the coach for the next four years. Not only in his capacity as a coach but with the line he sets with the youngsters at a coaching level,” Elisa Aguilar told the Spanish newspaper “AS”.

“He knows what our intention is, and I also know that the national team is very important to him. Now it’s more about timing. I am convinced that, in the end, we will reach a successful conclusion, and there will be an agreement with Scariolo.”

Sergio Scariolo has claimed five gold medals with Spain in the EuroBasket and FIBA World Cup as well as a bronze in the 2017 EuroBasket. In the Olympic Games, he has won the silver (2012) and bronze medal (2016), respectively.

Elisa Aguilar says Sergio Scariolo, Lorenzo Brown are a priority for the Spanish Basketball Federation

Aside from keeping Sergio Scariolo long-term, the president of the Spanish Basketball Federation Elisa Aguilar wants to see Lorenzo Brown lead the way for Spain in summer’s pre-Olympic Tournament.

Aguilar opened up about Brown’s status and shared confidence that the naturalized star guard will be in the lineup for summer’s tournament.

“When Maccabi came to play in Madrid, I had a coffee with him and Lorenzo’s predisposition is, 100%, to be in the Pre-Olympic in Valencia,” Aguilar said in the interview with AS.

Lorenzo Brown helped the Spaniards win the 2022 EuroBasket, while he stayed out of the 2023 FIBA World Cup to rest and recover from injuries. Spain will host one of the pre-Olympic Tournaments in Valencia (July 2-7).
