A’ja Wilson has been undoubtedly the superstar of the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament, but Team USA needed an extra boost from Breanna Stewart to down Belgium 74-87.
The former WNBA MVP started the game with 13 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field and USA took an 46-38 lead in the opening half. Belgium tried but wasn’t able to make a run in the second half as A’ja Wilson took control of the contest.
The Las Vegas Aces superstar finished the contest with 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Emma Meesseman contributed 25 points for Belgium. Germany became the first team to book its place in the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament quarterfinals from Group C by beating Japan 75–64. Satou Sabaly paved the way for the German team with 33 points and six rebounds.
In Group B of the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament, France doubled its victories to advance to the quarterfinal after winning against Nigeria 75–54. Marine Johannes led the way with 15 points and five assists. Ezinne Kalu led the way for Nigeria with 18 points. Australia bounce back from surprising defeat against Nigeria in the Women’s Basketball Olympic opener by getting a 70-65 win over Canada.
