Vassilis Spanoulis calls win vs Australia a ‘huge day for Greek basketball”

Vassilis Spanoulis had high praise for his players after the victory over Australia in the finale of Group A (71-77), which clinched a third-place finish for Greece. The Greek head coach called this victory a ‘huge day for Greek Basketball’.

“We’re not disappointed (that we didn’t protect a 19-point lead), this is a huge day for Greek basketball. We play against the best teams in the world, Canada won bronze medal last year, Australia won bronze medal in 2020 Olympic Games, Spain won gold medal, European champions, last year, and we were there, lost by two possessions. This is amazing for the Greek national team, after 15 years, so many years that we had one after another loss. What our players do, it’s unbelievable,” Vassilis Spanoulis told the official website of FIBA afterwards.

The Greeks have to wait until Saturday night to find out whether they will advance to the Top-8. If Serbia wins, they will qualify. If South Sudan wins, they will get eliminated. Should they advance, they will play either Team USA, France or Germany.
