Erik Spoelstra the frontrunner to take over Team USA

Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra is the frontrunner to take over Team USA and replace Steve Kerr. The head coach of the Golden State Warriors has expressed the desire to step down after five years with the national team as an assistant and head coach (2019-2024).

“Steve Kerr is likely to retire as Team USA head coach, which means a new lead voice for 2028 in Los Angeles. Erik Spoelstra is viewed as the strong internal favorite to become Team USA’s next in line following Gregg Popovich and Kerr,” Evan Sidery of Forbes reports.

Steve Kerr has won the gold medal in straight Olympics appearances (2021, 2024), while he finished seventh (2019) and fourth (2023), respectively, in the Basketball World Cup.

As for Erik Spoelstra, he has been part of Team USA’s coaching staff and has worked as a lead assistant over the past three years.
