Joel Embiid is coming home with an Olympic gold medal on his chest, and he’s set to discuss a new contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. As it was reported by ESPN 97.3, the 2023 NBA MVP is set to begin talks with the franchise before the start of the 2024–25 season.
Joel Embiid is entering the late part of his prime years at 30 years old, and maybe this is this is the most productive phase of his career. He was on pace for a historic season last year before a meniscus surgery limited him to 31 games the previous year.
He was back for the playoffs and helped the 76ers push the Knicks to six games in a back-and-forth series despite the fact that Philadelphia was the 7th seed. The former MVP is eligible to sign a three-year, maximum extension with the Sixers worth around $192 million.
If the two sides are able to come to an agreement, then the center from Cameroon will waive his player option for the 2026–27 season, and the additional three seasons will be added to the end of his current guaranteed years.
The two sides could hypothetically wait a year and look to agree on an extension next summer. However, there’s indication that both Joel Embiid and the 76ers want to continue together, per ESPN 97.3. If he signs a three-year extension, Embiid will be tied to a five-year deal with the franchise.
Philadelphia has already gone “all-in” this offseason after signing Paul George through free agency and locking up one-time All-Star Tyrese Maxey to a lucrative deal.
