Germany NT has announced the hiring of Alex Mumbru, who is set to take over the team’s bench for the upcoming EuroBasket. The Spaniard will make his debut on November 22 against Sweden in the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers.
Mumbru finished a successful basketball career playing for Real Madrid and Bilbao Basket, among others, and immediately started coaching at the Basque basketball club after his retirement.
The former Spanish international then moved to Valencia and made his debut in the EuroLeague as a coach in 2022, parting ways with the ACB powerhouse last April.
“I would like to thank you for your trust and am very excited to have the opportunity to be head coach of one of the best national teams in the world. My greatest wish is to help German basketball and quickly become a part of the German basketball family,” Mumbru noted.
Of course, I still have to wait quite a long time for the first training session with my new team, but there is a lot to do until then. I am very happy and ready to start working for German basketball.”
Mumbru is replacing Gordon Herbert, who concluded his presence in the German NT with two top-3 finishes in the last two FIBA international competitions, including a first-place finish in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Germany was in the top four of the latest Olympic tournament in Paris.
