OKC star reveals there is no “beef” with Victor Wembanyama

Chet Holmgren has been labeled as the answer to Victor Wembanyama for United States basketball production. The two young superstars went head-to-head for the Rookie of the Year award during the past season.

The French phenom and the American center went to each other in their rookie season, but Holmgren confirmed that the basketball rivalry is not extended off the court.

The forwards were not part of the same draft class, but they shared the same rookie season after Holmgren suffered a Lisfranc injury to his right foot that caused him to miss his 2022–23 campaign.

“We’re always going to compete, and if people take it as we got beef, those people don’t really understand competing, I guess,” the OKC Thunder young forward said during his appearance in Paul George’s Podcast P, per Bleacher Report.

Wembanyama won the rookie award unanimously. Holmgren received 98 of the 99 available second-place votes. Both Holmgren and Wembanyama share some similar characteristics as lanky forwards with long wingspans.

They have both shown over-the-limit efficiency in blocking shots and stretching the floor for their teams, respectively. Holmgren was a big part of the No. 1 seed OKC Thunder, which reached the second round of the 2024 NBA playoffs.

Wembanyama is set to play his sophomore season in San Antonio alongside some veteran players. Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes signed deals this summer, and Wemby hopes that they can help him bring the Spurs back to the postseason.
