With Zalgiris Kaunas searching for an addition in the perimeter after Tyrone Wallace left the club, the Lithuanians announced that they signed Lonnie Walker on a 1-year deal. Shams Charania was the first to report the news on Wednesday night. Walker started the preseason with the Celtics, but financial complications did not allow him to stay with the NBA reigning champions.
According to Sharania, the agreement includes an NBA-out clause that it will be active until February 18. Mike Scotto of Hoopshype revealed that the price of the buyout is set at $450,000. A huge move for Zalgiris, Walker is certainly a player that can lead the way in the offensive end.
A few months ago, he scored 15 points in the final quarter of the playoff semifinal between the Lakers and the Warriors on the road to a Western Conference Final berth. He had a solid season with the Nets and a stellar preseason with the Celtics. However, the defending champions were unable to sign him due to a cap-limiting reasons.
Signing Walker to a guaranteed deal earlier in the season will add to their luxury cap threshold $10 million more. Walker averaged 9.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting 35.6% from 3-point range during his six NBA seasons.
He also played for the Los Angeles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets. He will make his EuroLeague debut next week.
