Pau Gasol on Spain hosting the 2029 FIBA EuroBasket – “It will help the sport grow”

Pau Gasol opened up about Spain being announced as one of the four host countries for the 2029 FIBA EuroBasket. The Spaniards will host one group stage and the final stage of the tournament in Madrid.

The former NBA champion and FIBA legend shared his excitement about his country hosting the competition, and said that it would help the sport further grow in the country, as the opening game could take place at Real Madrid’s football stadium, Santiago Bernabeu, in front of 80,000 fans.

“I am glad that the 2029 FIBA EuroBasket will take place in Spain. Having the opportunity to play at Santiago Bernabeu will be a unique experience, we will see whether it will take place in front of 80,000 fans, but it is very positive and it will help the sport grow,” Pau Gasol said in an interview with Mundo Deportivo.

Estonia, Slovenia and Greece are the three other countries that will co-host the event, with one group stage each, while all four of them have automatically qualified for the tournament. The four countries will also participate in the 2025 FIBA EuroBasket, set to take place in late August – early September in Poland, Cyprus, Finland and Latvia.
