Chus Mateo on parting ways with Real Madrid – “It’s surprising to win the championship and still not continue”

After a three-year stint as head coach of Real Madrid, Chus Mateo and the club have officially parted ways, even though the former had a contract with the Whites through the summer of 2026.

Mateo led Real Madrid to the ACB title a week ago, but this wasn’t enough to keep him on the bench, as the front office had decided to move on from him apparently.

“I feared I would be let go even if we won. I had heard the rumors, but I believed winning the league might change things…It’s surprising to win the championship and still not continue,” Chus Mateo said in an interview with El Larguero and El Partidazo de COPE

“From the beginning, there was always a shadow over me—someone else possibly taking my place. I’ve learned to live with that…I’m leaving with my head held high. I gave everything and enjoyed three fantastic years. What more could I ask for?”

Chus Mateo took over as head coach in the summer of 2022 and led the Whites to a total of six trophies, including the EuroLeague title in 2023.

Sergio Scariolo, meanwhile, has become the new head coach of Real Madrid with a deal through the summer of 2028. The Italian head coach returns to the Whites after 23 years and makes his comeback to the EuroLeague after a two-year absence, as he coached Virtus Bologna through 2023.
