Derrick Rose to miss more time after undergoing ankle procedure

Knicks veteran guard Derrick Rose will eventually miss more time after undergoing an additional ankle procedure, the team announced Friday.

Rose originally injured his ankle back in December during a game against the Houston Rockets. He underwent ankle surgery and was expected to return at the end of February or early March.

There’s only 23 games remaining in the season. That might mean that he’s done for the rest of the year. Rose was on the verge of returning before unveiling an injury on his ankle this week.

The Knicks will continue to be thin at the point guard position, as Kemba Walker is also out for the rest of the year. Alec Burks is expected to assume the starting point guard position with rookie Miles McBride being potentially elected to gain more minutes.

The Knicks find themselves with a 25-34 record and currently sit two spots out of the final play-in spot in the East. They find themselves in a tough position as Rose was one of the few players capable of generating offense in the perimeter.

The Knicks may opt to throw away the season and retool their roster for the next year. However, that will be out of character for head coach Tom Thibodeau and the current Knicks front office.

The Knicks signed Rose to a three-year deal, worth $43 million contract last August. They also brought Walker and Evan Fournier to add more perimeter shooting creators in the roster.

However, things aren’t going as planned for the franchise, which ended up fourth in the East last season. After an unexpected run that led them to the postseason, the Knicks see the hope of building upon their last year’s success to evaporate.
