Lakers officially announce the signing of veteran guard DJ Augustin

Los Angeles Lakers announced the signing of veteran point guard DJ Augustin. Augustin-a 14-year veteran-will join the team for the rest of the season.

The Lakers waived Sekou Doumbouya (two-way) and DeAndre Jordan to sign Augustin and forward Wenyen Gabriel on a two-way deal.

Augustin spent the first part of the season with the Houston Rockets. He was released back in January as the rebuilding Rockets wanted to focus on giving more time to young prospects.

Augustin was selected with the ninth pick in the 2008 draft out of Texas, six spots behind Russell Westbrook. He will be an important veteran presence in the Lakers’ guard rotation.

The 5’11” guard has previously suited up for the Hornets, Pacers, Raptors, Bulls, Pistons, Thunder, Nuggets, Magic, and Bucks.

This season, Augustin averaged 5.4 points, 2.2 assists and 1.2 rebounds through 34 contests. Gabriel, 24, will be playing for his third team this season, following his time with the Nets and Clippers.

The Lakers have lost seven of their last 10 games, and presently occupy the Western Conference’s ninth seed with a dissatisfactory 27-33 record.

The Lakers are hoping to see Augustin providing a push in their second unit. The LA team has dropped significantly in the West. They will need to add wins the rest of the season hoping to remain in the playoff/play-in hunt.

DeAndre Jordan could potentially be a target for several NBA teams needing of a back-up center. The Philadelphia 76ers are reportedly among the teams interested in the veteran big.
