Jorge Garbajosa had high praise for former Real Madrid head coach Pablo Laso and addressed the possibility of the veteran head coach taking over Spain.

The president of the Spanish Basketball Federation didn’t rule out the posibility of Laso replacing current head coach Sergio Scariolo, who is under contract until 2024.

“It’s surprising because it wasn’t something expected. The opinion I have of Pablo as a coach and as a person is between 10 and 11. It’s a departure in unusual circumstances, and I lack arguments to give a qualified opinion.

Future as a coach? Sergio [Scariolo] has a contract until 2024, but Pablo Laso is a coach that any team and any national team would like to have. However, we are delighted with Sergio,” Garbajosa said in an interview with Radio Marca.

Pablo Laso remains a free agent after parting ways with Real Madrid last month following an 11-year stint with the club.

For his part, Scariolo is preparing his players for the upcoming Second Round of the Basketball World Cup Qualifiers (August 24-28) and the EuroBasket (September 1-18).

Spain will travel to Tbilisi in late August to take on hosts Georgia, Montenegro, Bulgaria, Turkey and Belgium in Group A.
