UConn becomes NCAA champion for 5th time in history

UConn returned to the top of the NCAA after nine years and became the national champion, following its 59-76 victory over the San Diego State in the Championship Game of the 2023 Final Four.

Adama Sanogo had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the winners, who saw Tristen Newton post a double-double with 19 points and 10 boards. The Huskies became the fifth team in the last 38 years to win all six games in March Madness by double digits and claim the championship.

On the contrary, Keshad Johnson had 14 points for San Diego State, who reached the Championship Game in their first trip to the Final Four.

UConn was in control for the majority of the game and led by as many as 16 late in the first half (20-36), but San Diego State came back and cut the deficit to five with five minutes to go (55-60).

A 9-0 run from the Huskies, though, brought the lead back to double figures and secured the first NCAA Championship for UConn since 2014 and fifth overall.
