Chus Mateo shares thoughts on Hezonja, Tavares future in Real Madrid

Real Madrid head coach Chus Mateo was called to share his thoughts on the future of Mario Hezonja and Walter Tavares with the club. The Spaniard shut down any rumors regarding the two superstars who are on expiring deals this season.

“I don’t care what it is said from the outside. My players are focused on what they have to do. These rumors are just science fiction,” Mateo told media after Real Madrid beat Gran Canaria on Sunday.

Real’s road trip to Athens last week was concluded with a perfect 2-0 record vs. Olympiacos and Panathinaikos. The “Whites” continued their run of domination Sunday vs. Gran Canaria, adding their 26th win in the 28 games they played so far during the 2023/24 season.

“People talk about Real Madrid players and that’s phenomenal. It means that they are having a good year and a good season, that people would love to have a Hezonja or a Tavares to their team.”

It is well known that Hezonja has a special relationship with Panathinaikos and the team’s fan base. However, Mateo is sure that both Hezonja and Tavares are happy to be in Madrid.

“They know, and I am sure, that they like being at Real Madrid , surely the best club in the world, where they have a good time with their teammates, they are having fun and where they aspire to win.”

During the summer, they were rumors that both players drew interest from Panathinaikos as the club was thriving in the summer market with the goal to become a EuroLeague top-tier team this year.

Real Madrid has been undoubtedly the best team in the EuroLeague so far, with a 12-1 record in the first two months of the season. The Spanish giants will hope to continue their dominant run against Pablo Laso and Bayern Munich on Thursday.
